Perplexity and burstiness in writing: what the metrics really mean

Perplexity and burstiness are statistical lenses often mentioned in discussions of AI-generated text. They can describe properties of writing, but neither metric can identify an author on its own.

What is perplexity?

Perplexity describes how predictable a sequence of words is to a language model. Familiar phrases and common word combinations tend to be easier to predict. A lower value does not automatically mean “written by AI,” and a higher value does not automatically mean “human.” Topic, genre, language ability, quotations, and technical terminology all affect predictability.

What is burstiness?

Burstiness describes variation across a text. In writing tools, it often refers to changes in sentence length, structure, or pacing. A paragraph made of six equally sized sentences can feel mechanical; a paragraph with deliberate short and long sentences may feel more dynamic.

Why these metrics cannot prove authorship

A careful human writer may produce predictable prose. An AI-assisted draft can contain wide sentence variation. Editing, translation, templates, and subject matter can move both metrics. That is why a naturalness score should be treated as guidance, not an AI authorship probability.

How to improve rhythm without gaming a detector

Do not insert rare words or random sentence fragments. Group related details, shorten the sentence that carries the main decision, and use a longer sentence when the relationship between ideas needs explanation. Rhythm should follow meaning.

A better review question

Instead of asking whether the score looks human, ask whether the reader can follow the argument, verify the evidence, and recognize the writer’s judgment.
